On Thursday, July 10, 2008, Town of Monroe
registered voters, as well as tax payers over the age of 18 will
have the opportunity to vote on four bonding resolutions that
will directly effect every resident, worker, and person traveling
through Monroe.
The resolutions are as follows:
-
$1,800,000 for the
implementation of an interoperable emergency radio
communications system
-
$900,000 for Departments of
Public Works Vehicles, Park and Recreation Vehicles, and an
Ambulance
-
$2,965,000 for the
replacement of fire apparatus
-
$50,000 for the replacement
of the HVAC unit at the 54 Jockey Hollow Road Fire & EMS Station
Fire apparatus being replaced
include apparatus that range in age from 19 to 37 years old.
Additionally, the apparatus will increase the overall "water on
wheels" available in Monroe, which helps with the approximately
33% of Monroe that has no fire hydrants.
The interoperable radio system
will allow for more efficient communication in the following manner:
-
Provide for three separate
fire channels, allowing individual incidents to operate on their
own frequency, which lessens confusion, allows urgent messages
to be transmitted without delay, and increases firefighter
safety.
-
Provides interoperability
between the police and fire departments, as well as the EMS.
-
Provides the capability for
first responders to contact school officials over the radio
system in an emergency.
-
Provides extensive coverage
for DPW plow trucks, which increases worker safety in the event
of an accident, discovery of an emergency, or if the vehicle is
disabled.
The HVAC system replacement is
addressing the issue of inadequate air flow within the building.
When the building was added onto, the addition failed to address the
issue of needing increased air flow. Independent assessments
from three HVAC companies have resulted in identical results - total
system replacement.
The $900,000 DPW, P&R, and
ambulance replacements address significant deficiencies in these
vehicles. Vehicles being replaced include aging plow trucks,
the animal control vehicle, and a twelve year-old ambulance with
more than 100,000 miles.
The polls will be open from
6 am to 8 pm on Thursday, July 10, 2008 at all four districts.
We urge all resident to
support Monroe's Public Safety.
