Heavy Fire Showing

At 14:12 hours Dispatch notified all companies of a reported house on fire at 82 Maplewood Dr.  At 14:13 and 14:15 dispatch advised units of multiple 9-1-1 calls reporting heavy fire and smoke from the rear of a structure.  The 3rd caller stated he yelled inside and received no answer.  FM-1 (Davin) arrived first reporting smoke showing from the rear and took Maplewood Command.  Captain 256 arrived next confirming heavy fire from the rear of the structure.  Engine 101 (Stepney) arrived first due and took the hydrant into the scene.  E-101 Nozzleman & Captain 256 forced entry and made entry with an 1 3/4" line to begin knocking down the fire.  E-204 arrived seconds later and stretched a second line to the second floor with Lt. 257 (Holt), FF Chila, & FF B. Klein.  During their search of the second floor, Lt Holt rescued a small dog from an upstairs room.  The remaining crew finished the search with negative results.  E-204's engineer through multiple ground ladders for the searching crews.  At 14:31 hours command deemed the main body of the fire knocked down, and at 14:38 hours command reported the situation under control.  At 15:39 hours FM-1 terminated fire command and proceeded with the investigation.  Interior units made an excellent knock down of the fire, however, the structure contained significant fire damage in the kitchen and outside walls, and heavy smoke damage throughout.
MVA - Off the Road

At 01:36 Monroe Fire & EMS was alerted to Route 110 at Route 111 for the Motor Vehicle Accident, reported vehicle off the road.  Engine 201 arrived with three and reported one vehicle completely off the road, down a significant embankment approximately 35 feet.  EMS notified fire units that no patient had been found as of yet and the vehicle was not accessible.  Engine 201 requested a second due rescue company to assist with a search of the area.  The members of the engine company secured a rope line and descended to the vehicle and began a search with the thermal imager and lights.  First checks proved negative and the additional incoming units were cancelled.  Secondary searches also proved negative and damage to the vehicle was deemed insufficient to cause serious injury.  The engine crew awaited the wrecker, which arrived shortly, however, the vehicle removal took over one hour.  Upon completion of the removal, units realized the wrecker had caused a fuel spill and mitigated the spill.

At 00:52 hours Monroe Fire was dispatched second due to the 400 block of Main Street (Route 25) for the reported heavy fire showing from a building.  Dispatch advised units of multiple 911 calls and PD on scene confirming a working fire in a vacant building.  E-101 & 104 arrived simultaneously reporting heavy fire from "C" side.  E-101 took the first due position and pulled an 1 3/4" line and began an aggressive exterior operation as E-104 reverse laid to the hydrant.  The first due truck (T-100) was instructed to position themselves in the roadway and put the masterstreams to work due to the tight area of the driveway.  The second due truck (Q-200) secured a secondary water supply by laying a line from Route 25 and Route 59 and pumping to themselves and the truck.  E-201 arrived as the third due engine with 5 and stretched a second line from E-101 to the roof, as well as performed interior operations and first floor vent.  R-320 arrived and provided support, and T-204 (Long Hill) arrived with 6 to provide a RIT.  At 01:46 hours the fire was deemed under control and the last units cleared at 03:21 hours following an investigation.  Photos courtesy of M. Possible Structure Fire

At 08:20 hours Monroe Fire was alerted to 535 Monroe Tpk, CVS Pharmacy, for the reported structure fire.  Dispatch advised incoming units that the caller stated they smelled smoke and the alarms were activated.  First arriving C-253 (Krize) reported nothing from the exterior.  Engine 201 & 204 arrived next and reported a possible furnace problem and request the first due ladder (Q-200) to ladder the roof.  Q-200 arrived and investigated to find no problems.  Command placed Engine 101 and Truck 100 in service and units cleared.
Car Fire w/ Exposure

At 08:42 hours Monroe Fire was alerted to the possible car fire with an exposure to the structure at 558 Fan Hill Road.  First arriving Engine 201 reported an engine compartment fire within four feet of the exposure.  Firefighters knocked down the fire with an 1 3/4" line and and checked for extension due to visible charring on the structure.  Crews utilized a TIC and CO meter to check the structure as well.

At 15:22 hours Monroe Fire along with Stepney and Stevenson were alerted to 43 Elaine Drive for the reported house on fire.  Dispatch advised units that PD called this in reported that Trumbull PD pulled a women over who reported her son just notified her that the house was on fire.  First in E-201 arrived to find a fire on the stove, out upon arrival.  Units checked for extension and found none.  Command (FM Davin) held the assignment to E-201 and placed Engine 204 and 101 in service.

At 17:30 hours Monroe Fire was alerted to a serious MVA at the intersection of Barn Hill Rd and Captains Hills Rd.  Dispatch advise incoming units of (E-201 & Q-200) of a possible trapped party and fluid spill.  First in 201 reported, no entrapment, but a significant accident with fluids.  Q-200 and R-320 remained on scene for an extended period assisting PD with their investigation.

Around 15L00 hours, Monroe Fire with EMS was alerted to Route 110 near the Whitney Farms Golf Course for the reported MVA, with a dump truck on its side.  Units arrived to find the patient out of the vehicle and a minor fluid spill.  Units mitigated the spill and awaited the wrecker to remove the vehicle from behind the guardrail.  This was one of 9 calls this Halloween.  Other calls included 3 residential fire alarms, an alarm at Fawn Hollow School, an alarm at Masuk High School, and three other MVAs.

At 14:50 hours Monroe Fire along with Stepney, Stevenson, and EMS was alerted to the Garder Road area for the reported MVA, with a vehicle rolled into the woods.  Units on scene found a seriously injured patient who had self-extricated himself.  Units mitigated all hazards.  Q-200 & E-101 remained on scene for the wrecker.

Around 01:30 hours, Monroe Fire with EMS was requested to respond IFO 108 Jockey Hollow Road for the reported MVA, car into the guardrail.  E-201, Q-200, and C-252 responded to the incident.  With the close proximity to The Hollow, Q-200 arrived in seconds reporting 1 car off the road into the guardrail/woods.  Q-200s crew investigated to determine everyone was out of the vehicle and negative fluids.  C-252 held the assignment to the Quint, and awaited the wrecker.

Just after 18:30 hours, Monroe Fire and Stevenson for an additional Rescue were requested by EMS to respond to the MVA at Old Tannery Road and Route 110.  EMT's on scene reported serious injuries and a person trapped..  E-201, S-230, R-330, C-351 & C352 went enroute, and arrived to find a two vehicle wreck involving a high-speed rear end collision.  First-in E-201 put their cutter and spreader to work and removed the driver's side door of a heavily damaged Nissan Sentra.  Units made quick work of the door and then assisted with patient packaging.  Units remained on scene to assist PD with traffic throughout the investigation.  From the photos you can see the extent of the damage caused by the wreck.  Photos courtesy of C-351.

At 17:37 hours Monroe Fire was alerted to 32 Lanthorne Drive for the reported house on fire.  First in units found a fire in an inside room ignited by a cigarette.  Units made quick work of the fire and cleared.

At 17:51 hours, Stepney Fire, EMS, and Monroe Fire as automatic mutual aid to in front of 246 Main St for the reported three car accident with entrapment.  C-151 (Klemish) arrived first requesting an additional paramedic and BLS unit to be added stating he had a three car MVA head on.  Seconds later, C-151 notified dispatch that three people were trapped in two separate vehicles and requested a third rescue company assigned, bringing Stevenson to the alarm.  Crews from R-120, E-101, E-201, C-253, and R-320 assisted extricating the victims from their respective vehicles and with patient care.

At 14:52 hours Monroe PD notified Monroe Fire Dispatch of a report that Walgreens Pharmacy at 275 Monroe Turnpike was on fire.  While enroute dispatch advised units that the police were on scene and there was no fire, but to continue to respond with traffic.  Units arriving on scene discovered PD in process of of apprehending two alleged armed criminals who had just robbed Peoples Units Bank down the street.  They had crashed their vehicle into a utility pole and then went into Walgreens.  Fire units cleared once a hazard check was completed.  At 16:16 hours, PD special called an available ladder truck to respond back to Walgreens to assist in the investigation.  Officers utilized the ladder to search the roof of Walgreens.  Thanks to Monroe PD for taking two more criminals off the streets.

Today was another busy day with the Midtown Express running six alarms.  It started at 09:06 hours with a vehicle leaking fuel.  Units mitigated the leak and notified DEP because the homeowner has washed the fuel into the roadway.  The remainder of the day remained relatively quiet with the next alarm at 17:39 hours reporting the vehicle leaking fuel (again) at the same residence.  Once again units mitigated the spill and informed the resident to have the leak repaired.  At 21:51 units were alerted to Moss Rd for the reported carbon monoxide incident with parties feeling ill.  E-201, S-230, and C-251 met medics on scene and metered the house.  Units found no readings and attributed the alarm to a low battery.  At 22:21 hours units were alerted to the vehicle rollover near Fan Hill Road and Garder Rd.  Units found a vehicle rolled over approximately 15 feet into the woods IFO 265 Garder Road.  Units checked for hazards and secured the scene.  At 22:42 hours units were alerted to the area of Millbrook Terr and Route 111 for the reported teenagers lighting objects on fire in the roadway.  E-201, S-230, and C-251 met with PD and found no evidence of fire or juveniles in the area.  The day ended 00:30 hours the next day with the automatic alarm on Evergreen Lane.  Units found no problem and went in service.

During the morning monsoon of August 8, Monroe Fire was alerted to the telephone pole on fire IFO 555 Fan Hill Road at 06:32 hours.  First arriving S-230 reported the same along with primaries on fire.  E-204 from Station 1 reported a transformer explosion at Moose Hill Road and Route 110 while en-route.  E-204 took in that alarm and reported no hazards and continued in to the pole fire.  Once the breaker tripped at the pole fire, the fire burnt itself out and units cleared.  At 08:00 hours dispatch advised units of wires on fire IFO 503 Moose Hill Road.  FM-1 (Davin) on scene confirmed primary wires and a tree on fire.  FM-1, 256, and MPD closed the road and awaited CL&P.  At 08:45 hours Monroe Fire was alerted with Stevenson Fire to Route 34 at the Dam for the reported 4-car motor vehicle accident.  E-201 went enroute and was notified that Oxford FD, PD, and EMS were on scene and the accident was in Oxford, however, Route 34 needed to be closed on the Monroe end.  E-201 continued with R-320 to close the road.  E-201 arrived and immediately was redirected to the reported shed fire somewhere in the area of Beardsley Field on Cross Hill Road.  E-201, 204, E-101, and R-320 went enroute.  Units on scene found nothing -- FM-1 arrived at the callers residence to get further explanation.  Units contributed the smoke scare to the pole fire down the street.  Later in the day units went to an automatic alarm on Perry Drive.
2 MVA's and 2 Tree Fires

At 02:45 hours Monroe Fire and Monroe EMS was alerted to IFO 270 Moose Hill road for the reported motor vehicle accident with a car wedged between a telephone pole and stone wall.  First arriving E-201 confirmed the report and determine all occupants were accounted for out of the vehicle.  Q-200 arrived shortly thereafter.  Units determined there were no hazards to mitigate.  Q-200 went in service, while E-201 awaited the wrecker.  Later in the day at 12:33 hours Monroe Fire was alerted to Church St at Fan Hill Road for the reported MVA with a fluid spill.  E-201 arrived to find a moderate antifreeze spill and mitigated the hazard.  At 15:22, E-201 took in a tree and wire fire IFO 295 Cross Hill Road.  Units on scene found arching wires and a branch on fire.  E-201, Q-200, and 252 closed the road and awaited for the power company.  At 18:44 hours E-201 took in another tree fire, this time IFO 370 Cross Hill Road.  E-201 on scene confirmed the same.  CL&P arrived shortly and mitigated the hazard.
Brush Fire, Lawn Mower Fire, and CO Incident

Thursday, August 2 was an average day for the department responding to a brush fire in the Stepney district at 17:38 hours.  Stepney units on scene reported a fire due to wires down.  E-101 held the assignment to themselves.  Twenty minutes later, Monroe was alerted to the area of Cross Hill and Elm Street for the reported lawn mower fire.  Units found a lawn mower, extinguished by the owner at 4 Millo Drive.  Upon cleaning the fire, units were alerted to 27 Yankee Hill Road for the reported carbon monoxide incident with the homeowner's meter reading 218 ppm.  Engines 201 and 204 responded to investigate.  Units determined a malfunctioning unit was to blame.

At 21:43 hours Monroe Fire was alerted automatic mutual to Stepney for the reported MVA with extrication at the intersection of Judd Road and Velvet Street.  Engines 101, 201, Rescue 120, and Quint 200 responded with 18 firefighters.  First arriving Stepney units performed a rapid extrication of the single occupant.  Monroe Firefighters assisted with the patient removal and member of Quint 200 staged if needed.  Medics transported the occupant to Bridgeport Hospital on a trauma alert.

At 03:04 hours Monroe Fire was dispatched to Route 110 (Shelton Road) at Old Tannery Road (the third crossing) for the reported vehicle into a telephone pole.  E-201 arrived first to find the vehicle already on a flat-bed.  Q-200 arrived thereafter and all units checked for hazards.  No hazards found, C, L, & P was notified and units went in service.

At 23:45 hours Monroe Fire was alerted to IFO 915 Monroe Turnpike for the vehicle off the road, which had rolled multiple times.  Upon arrival of Chief 251 (Lattanzi), the lone occupant was out of the vehicle.  E-201 arrived shortly thereafter and mitigated all hazards.  Units awaited the arrival of the wrecker and assisted PD with the road closure.

At 07:04 hours Monroe fire was dispatched to the reported three car motor vehicle accident IFO 707 Monroe Tpk.  First in 201 discovered the accident at the intersection of Routes 110 and 111.  With everyone out, E-201 and Q-200 secured a significant  fluid spill and disconnected compromised vehicle batteries.
Oven Fire

At 19:42 hours Monroe Fire was dispatched to the reported oven fire at 358 Cross Hill Road.  The police officer on scene confirmed an oven fire contained to the unit, with the oven locked in a self-cleaning mode.  C-252 and E-201 arrived, disconnected power to the unit, and let the fire burn itself out in the locked oven.  Units checked for extension and went in service.
Telephone Pole Fire

At 20:55 hours units were alerted to a transformer on fire at the intersection of Wheeler Road at Cross Hill Road.  Units on scene determined the call was unfounded.  Upon clearing, units were alerted at 21:04 hours to Cross Hill Road at Moose Hill Road for the telephone pole on fire.  Units returning to the station redirected to this location and discovered a telephone pole and wires burning pretty good.  Units secured the intersection closing both streets.  About 45 minutes into the alarm some vivid arching took place, which led the fire to burn itself out.  Units investigated the stability of the wires and the pole, reopened the road, and cleared shortly thereafter.

At 18:15 hours Monroe Fire was dispatched to a reported three vehicle accident at the intersection of Route 111 and Purdy Hill Road with police department reporting a fluid spill.  E-201, Q-200, and R-120 went en route.  E-201 and R-120 handled fluids and secured the vehicles.  Q-200 was cancelled en route.
