Telephone Pole Fire
Thursday, May 31, 2007
At 20:55 hours units were alerted to a transformer on fire at the intersection of Wheeler Road at Cross Hill Road.  Units on scene determined the call was unfounded.  Upon clearing, units were alerted at 21:04 hours to Cross Hill Road at Moose Hill Road for the telephone pole on fire.  Units returning to the station redirected to this location and discovered a telephone pole and wires burning pretty good.  Units secured the intersection closing both streets.  About 45 minutes into the alarm some vivid arching took place, which led the fire to burn itself out.  Units investigated the stability of the wires and the pole, reopened the road, and cleared shortly thereafter.
Motor Vehicle Accident

At 18:15 hours Monroe Fire was dispatched to a reported three vehicle accident at the intersection of Route 111 and Purdy Hill Road with police department reporting a fluid spill.  E-201, Q-200, and R-120 went en route.  E-201 and R-120 handled fluids and secured the vehicles.  Q-200 was cancelled en route.
Overheated Electric Motor

At 12:42 hours Monroe Fire was alerted to 501 Monroe Turnpike, Brooks Pharmacy, for the reported smell of smoke in the building.  Dispatch advised occupants to evacuate the store.  E-201 arrived first due with reporting a commercial structure with nothing showing.  Personnel investigated the interior to find no odor or visible smoke.  Crews from E-101 and E-201 moved the investigation to the roof to check the HVAC units.  Upon investigation, units found an HVAC unit with a seized motor that had visible charring and a strong electrical odor coming from it.  Personnel used the HVAC units electrical kill switch to disable all electrical current to the unit and advised the occupants to notify the HVAC company.
5 Days, 6 Fires
Monday, May 21 - Friday, May 25, 2007
Over the past 5 days Monroe Fire has responded to 6 fires, along with numerous other alarms.  It al began on Monday, with a reported structure fire on Hiram's Hill Road.  Units arrived to find a working closet fire, which was quickly extinguished with a water can off of Engine 101 (Stepney) by Firefighter C. Zaleta (Monroe).  Q-200 and E-201 stood by on scene while crews checked for extension.  Following this fire, Monroe was requested to provide one engine to Stepney for a reported oven fire Tuesday evening on Cutlers Farm Road.  Engine 201 went en-route with 5 and was returned shortly thereafter.  Wednesday morning Monroe was alerted to 440 Main Street for the possible fire in the walls of a restaurant.  Units on scene discovered an electrical fire out on arrival.  Crews check for extension and secured utilities.  Wednesday afternoon Dispatch notified units of a heavy smoke condition in the residence of 123 Longview Road.  Chief 251 (Lattanzi) arrived first and reported a moderate smoke condition and a working oven fire.  Q-200 arrived first due and extinguished the fire with a dry chem.  E-201 and E-101 provided ventilation.  See photos below.  Fire number five occurred early Thursday morning as Monroe was alerted mutual aid to Stepney at 02:12 hours for the reported wires arching and on fire going into a commercial structure (Dunkin) on Route 25.  Q-200 arrived and assisted Stepney with investigating the arching wires.  Units found a shorted out heat wire inside a conduit leading from the drain of a condenser of a walk-in cooler.  Units secured the utilities and ventilated the structure.  Fire number six, came on Friday at 13:02 hours as units were alerted to a possible structure fire at 631 Main Street.  First in units found wires on the outside of the building actively burning towards the building.  Q-200 assisted with searching the structure for any signs of fire, while E-204 stood by on scene and E-201 took the hydrant at Main and Bart.  Once the utility company arrived on scene units cleared.  See photos below.
All in all, no fires caused major damage and many good stops were made.  Thanks to all.
Record Setting Monday

With a record setting late season nor'easter pounding the state with rain, the Monroe Fire Department ran a record number of calls in a twenty-four hour period.  Throughout Sunday night to Tuesday Morning, Monroe Fire responded to over 40 emergency calls.  These calls ranged from motor vehicle accidents to numerous public service calls for water problems.  In total over 8 inches of ran fell in Monroe and kept members extremely busy all day.  Thanks to all who assisted during the day's operations.
MVA w/ Injuries

At 1721 hours Monroe Fire was dispatched to the reported Motor Vehicle Accident with injuries at the intersection of Elm Street and Bug Hill Road.  Units on scene secured a fluid spill and other vehicle hazards.  Chief 252 (Solek) had command.
Structure Fire

At 1651 hours Units were alerted to 51 Jockey Hollow Road for the reported Structure Fire.  Dispatch indicated the caller reported the back of her house was on fire.  This residence, being literally feet from Station 2, had units on scene extremely quick.  Captain 255 (Krize) arrived first to find that wood pile underneath the deck was on fire, however the homeowners had successfully extinguished the fire.  Upon arrival of the engine, member stretched a line to soak down the area.  FM-1 (Davin) Investigated the fire.  Captain 255 has command  Units ran 6 other alarms throughout the day and participated in live fire training with in the Stevenson district.

Rollover w/ Extrication

Around 10:35 hour as the snow began to fall units were alerted to Rt. 111 at Josies Ring Road automatic aid to Stevenson for the rollover with confirmed extrication.  Engine 201 responded with four and assisted Stevenson with removal of occupant and hazards.  Monroe cleared by 1100 hrs.  Monroe ran an additional accident around 07:30 hours.

Mutual Aid Structure Fire

At 20:14 hours Monroe and Stevenson were requested mutual aid to Shelton for the reported fully involved barn fire.  The City of Shelton requested each department to direct their tankers to the scene for a water supply operation at 31 School Street in the White Hills District.  Tanker 216 and Chief 251 responded from Monroe.  Tanker 216 delivered over 15,000 gallons of water over three hours.

Kitchen Fire
Monday, March 5, 2007

At 13:42 hours Dispatch notified units of a grease fire at the Purdy Hill Bakery in the Kitchen.  First in units arrived and found the fire had been extinguished by occupants, but a heavy smoke condition in the building.  Engines 201 and 101 ventilated the structure.  Chief 251 (Lattanzi) had command.  Last units cleared at 14:15 hours.

Car Fire
Sunday, February 25, 2007

Around 17:20 hours Dispatched alerted units to a reported vehicle fire near the intersection of Route 111 and Jeanette Street.  Chief 251 (Lattanzi) arrived after FM-1 (Davin) and confirmed his report of a car fire "burnin pretty good".  Engine 201 deployed 1-3/4" line and extinguished the blaze.  Crew members from Quint 200 assisted with extinguishment and overall.

Busy Sunday
Sunday, February 18, 2007
The day started off around 02:50 hours for the reported car fire with possible entrapment on Purdy Hill Road.  Chief 251 (Lattanzi) arrived to a corrected address of 323 Purdy in the Stepney District.  The Chief requested 1 engine from Stepney to respond and established command confirming a single car crash into the wood, fully involved in fire.  First in units learned an occupant was pulled prior to the full involvement of the vehicle by a bystander.  Engines 101 and 201 arrived simultaneously followed by Quint 200.  All crews went to work with extinguishment, assisting EMS, and checking the wooded area for any other victims via thermal cameras.  All searches came up negative.  Monroe Units cleared and Stepney awaited vehicle removal.
Throughout the day Monroe also responded to a water hazard, EMS assist, and an automatic alarm.  During the evening at 20:39 hours, Monroe was requested to respond in the area of 535 Monroe Tpk for the reported dumpster fire.  Chief 252 (Solek) arrived at a corrected address of 536 Monroe Tpk reporting a heavily involved 5 yard dumpster.  The crew from 201 made quick work of the job and returned to service.  252 had the dumpster command.
Outside Fire

At 16:26 hours Monroe Fire was dispatched for the brush fire at 230 Porters Hill Road.  Units received a corrected address of 224 Porters Hill Road will en route..  Chief 251 (Lattanzi) arrived and found an outside burn that went out of control and started a small rubbish fire.  The fire was extinguished with an 1-3/4 line off of E-201.  251 had the command.  Units cleared at 17:04

Mutual Aid Structure Fire

At 11:48 hours, Monroe Fire was requested to 288 Maple Rd in Easton for a working fire.  Chief 251 and Tanker 216 went en-route and arrived to a fully involved fire.  216 dropped their folding tank and over 14,000 gallons of water supplying Long Hill Squad 9.  Squad 9 was supplying an Easton Engine through over 1500 feet of LDH.  A second supply line was fed through a local pond with another Engine at that draft site.
Structure Fire

At approximately 1:15 AM, E201, Q200 and T216 were called to assist the Stevenson Fire Department at the scene of a structure fire on Clydesdale Court. Upon investigating an activated fire alarm with a reported smoke odor, units discovered fire in a large closet area of the new oversized home. Stevenson crews made a quick stop before the fire spread to adjoining areas. Monroe units assisted with overhaul, ventilation and clean-up. This was the second consecutive night of working structure fires in town, both in freezing temperatures which hampered operations.  Chief 351 had command.


Warehouse Fire
Tuesday, February 6, 2007
At 16:49 hours all three companies were alerted to 476 Pepper Street in the Stepney District for a reported structure fire.  First arriving Engine 104 encountered heavy smoke pushing from a one story concrete warehouse style building.  Engines 101 and 201 arrived simultaneously as second due engine companies with Engine 201 securing a water supply and laying in 600 feet of LDH to 104.  Units made an aggressive interior attack, however, command had to pull units out because of a roof collapse threat.  Command requested additional ladder and engine companies from the Long Hill (Trumbull) and Botsford (Newtown) fire departments because of extreme cold weather conditions and the prolonged operation.  Monroe Fire pulled all available apparatus to the scene bringing Engines 201 and 204, Rescue 220, Tanker 216, Quint 200, and Squad 230.  Chief Klemish (151) had command, Captains Catalano (254) and Krize (255) had rear operations, Chief Lewis (153) had front operations.  FM-1 (Davin) and FM-4 (Doyle) investigated the blaze.  Check out www.firegroundimages.com for an extensive image gallery courtesy of Keith Muratori.  Click here for the WTNH 11 PM Newscast of the Fire.

Chimney Fire

At 17:30 hours Monroe was dispatched to assist Stevenson at 440 Webb Circle for the chimney fire.  Engines 201, 204, and Quint 200 responded.  Safety Officer 364 (York) arrived and reported smoke from the chimney.  Shortly thereafter, Chief 251 (Lattanzi) arrived and established command.  Crews removed contents from wood stove and cleared the chimney.  Engines 201, 204, 302, and Tanker 316 were on scene.  Units cleared at 1845.  Q-200 and Stepney were cancelled enroute and handled a fire alarm in the Monroe district.

Odor Investigation

At 15:03 hours Monroe was dispatched to assist Stepney at 721 Main Street for the odor of gas outside.  Engine 201 and Chief 251 arrived and assisted Stepney with the investigation.  Crews found a small propane leak in a vacant house.  The house was ventilated and units cleared at 1531 hrs.

Chimney Fire
Tuesday, January 16, 2007
At 15:55 all companies were dispatched for the reported structure fire at 102 Hillside Lane.  Assistant Chief Solek arrived first to find a 2 story wood-frame with a chimney fire.  Crews from all three companies worked to extinguish the fire.  Crews were on scene for about an hour.  Chief Lattanzi (251) had the command. 
 
Inside Fire
Tuesday, January 16, 2007

At 11:49 Monroe Fire was dispatched mutual aid to Stevenson for smoke in the garage at 7 Trail Side Dr.   Chief 251 and Engine 201 arrived and reported a 2 1/2 story wood-frame with nothing showing.  Crew investigated and found a small fire caused by ashes from the fireplace which were placed in a paper bag.  The fire was extinguished and all units cleared.

Structure Fire
Tuesday, January 16, 2007

On Tuesday January 16th at approximately 5:00 a.m., Monroe volunteer firefighters were dispatched along with Truck-100 for a possible fire in the residence of 63 Doris Dr.  Lt 257 (Holt) arrived to find smoke showing and the house evacuated.  Chief 251 arrived shortly after and reported a 2 story wood-frame with smoke and fire showing from the second floor and requested Stevenson for RIT.  Engine 201 arrived as the first due engine and stretched an 1 3/4" line to the fire floor.  Engine 101 (Stepney) secured a water supply from the hydrant to 201 and then spit their crew up for interior and exterior operations.  Rescue 220 and Truck 100 performed roof ventilation and  the crew from Engine 204 stretched a 2nd line to the attic and a back-up line to the outside.  Rescue 320 arrived and their crew was utilized for RIT and clean-up.  The fire was placed under control in 20 minutes and units remained on scene for extensive overhaul.  No one was injured, but the house sustained extensive fire damage to its three bedrooms and significant smoke damage to the rest of the home and its contents.  Fire Marshal Davin operated as the safety officer, Chief Klemish (Stepney) was assigned to operations, and Chief Lattanzi had command.  Thank you to Stepney Fire, Stevenson Fire (RIT) and AMR for their assistance.  [click photos to enlarge]
